Obituary for Richard D. Cannon
Richard D. Cannon, 62, of Altamont left his earthly home at 1:31 p.m. Monday, April 23, 2012, at home, with his family near. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at First Baptist Church, Altamont, with the Rev. Richard Mulvaney officiating. Burial with military rites will be held in Union Cemetery, Altamont. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at Kull Funeral Chapel, Altamont, and for one hour prior to the funeral service Saturday at the church. Memorials may be made to the donor's choice or the Cannon family. Richard Dale Cannon was born July 17, 1949, at home in Clay City, into the family of Bill and June Mitchell-Cannon. Richard was the third child of five siblings born into the family. Hard work and strong ideals were part of his family life. Richard received his grade and high school education in Flora. He married Caroline Elizabeth Gaines on March 26, 1974, in Flora. He was a member of First Baptist Church, VFW Post 7676 and American Legion Post 512, all of Altamont. Mr. Cannon honored his nation's call for service and was inducted in the U.S. Army on April 22, 1969, and served his country honorably with two enlistments, receiving an honorable discharge on May 29, 1979. He received two overseas bars during the Vietnam War service, both in infantry and armor reconnaissance. Upon moving to Altamont in 1992, Richard was gainfully employed by A & H Implement Co., where he attended, greeted and cared for their customers daily, until his illness caused his early retirement in February 2012. He is survived by his wife, Caroline E. Cannon of Altamont; two daughters, Teresa (friend, Ben Hurst) Cannon of Altamont and Mary (friend, Anthony Graham Sr.) Cannon of Centralia; six grandchildren, Tyler Hurst, Devin Durbin and Kaitlyn Hurst, Tray and Kain Christianson and Matthew Graham; two brothers, Wesley (wife, Mabel) Cannon and Steve (wife, Patricia) Cannon, both of Olney; brother-in-law, Peter Ainley of McDougal, Ark.; sister-in-law, Charlotte Cannon of Joliet; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, William "Bill" Cannon and Alice June Mitchell-Cannon; brother, Dennis Cannon; sister, Linda Ainley; grandson, Anthony Joe Graham Jr. at 3 years of age; and granddaughter, Annaleida June Hurst at 3 months of age.
