Arthur S. Schroeder, 88, of Altamont left his earthly home early Thursday morning, April 12, 2012, at 5:20 a.m. at St. Anthony's Memorial Hospital, Effingham. Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Sunday afternoon at Bethlehem Evangelical Lutheran Church, rural Altamont, with the Rev. Clayton Vail officiating. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. today, Saturday, at Kull Funeral Chapel, Altamont, and for one hour prior to the funeral service at the church. Burial will be in Bethlehem Lutheran Church Cemetery, Altamont. For those who prefer memorials, they may be directed to Bethlehem Lutheran Church, Lutheran Care Center or the donor's choice. Arthur Schroeder was born Jan. 18, 1924, at home in the Bethlehem Community, rural Altamont, into the family of Edward H. Schroeder and Martha W. Yagow-Schroeder. Arthur was the ninth child of 11 siblings born into the Christian family. Hard work and a strong faith were part of his family life. Arthur received his eighth-grade education at Bethlehem Lutheran School in Effingham County and was a grain farmer for most of his life. He was never married. He was a life member of Bethlehem Lutheran Church and Effingham County Farm Bureau. Mr. Schroeder had enlisted in the Army of the United States on March 14, 1945, and served his country honorably, being discharged Nov. 29, 1946, serving in the Asiatic Pacific Theater. Throughout his years he enjoyed farming and had an acute interest in music. Most importantly, he maintained his family and church values until his failing health provided the avenue to sell his farm and retire. He is survived by his two sisters-in-law, Mrs. Louis (Marilyn Rierson Kirkhus-Schroeder) of DeKalb and Mrs. Elvin (Lorene Campe-Schroeder) of Altamont; and several nieces and nephews and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, Edward Herman Schroeder and Martha Wilhelmine Yagow-Schroeder; six brothers, Clarence and his wife, Marie, Schroeder, Otto and his wife, Mabel, Schroeder, Albert and his wives, Hilma and Millie, Schroeder, Carl and his wife, Hilda, Schroeder, Louis and his first wife, Hilma, Schroeder and Elvin Schroeder; four sisters, Esther Martha Schroeder in her infancy, Paula and her husband, Elmer, Schwerdtfeger, Evelyn Louise Schroeder in her youth at age 1 1/2 and Ella Cordelia Schroeder at age 20.
