Obituary for Victor John Ziegler
Victor John Martin Ziegler was born December 1, 1914 at home on the family farm in Moccasin Township, Effingham County, the Blue Point Community near Altamont into the family of Erwin and Pauline Burrow-Ziegler. Victor was the fourth eldest child of nine children and one foster child in the large Christian family. Hard work and a strong faith were part of his family life. He was baptized into his Christian faith at St. Paul "Blue Point" Lutheran Church, moved to Effingham at 9 years of age and later confirmed his faith at St. John's Lutheran Church, Effingham, Illinois. He married Nell E. Hightower on April 15, 1938 in St. John's Lutheran Church and she proceeded in death on June 12, 2003. In his younger years Victor worked at the Vulcan Heel Company in Effingham County from 1932 through 1942 operating a splitting machine on tanned leather to insure the proper thickness, and at the Dr. Pepper bottling company. On August 5th, 1943 his country called him to duty in the United States Army. Upon receiving two bronze battle stars serving in the Asiatic Pacific Theater and three overseas bars serving in the South Philippines, New Guinea, and Luzon Sergeant Ziegler was honorably discharged on January 21, 1946. Upon returning to Effingham he worked for Hightower Buick and other automobile dealerships ending with his retirement from Poland Pontiac/Buick. He was an Uncle to numerous nephews and nieces and enjoyed being with family for birthdays, holidays and reunions. Victor lived at the Lutheran Care Center and Luther Terrace during his later years and had always been and avid St. Louis Cardinal Fan. He was a former member of the American Legion Post #120 in Effingham and enjoyed playing independent baseball as a young man. He was looked after by his nephew Dean Manuel of Altamont and his niece Charlene Hightower of Effingham. He is survived by His: 2-Youngest Sisters: Mrs. Charles (Rosella) Frank. Dallas, Texas. Mrs. Gerald (Gertrude "Trudy") Graves, Belleville Illinois. 1-Sister-in-law: Mrs. Arlon (Dorine) Ziegler, Long Beach California. Several Nieces and Nephews. He was preceded in death by his: Parents:Erwin Henrich Louis Ziegler, Hulda Pauline Bertha Burrow-Ziegler. 2-Brothers: Arlon Zieger, Elmer and Madave Ziegler. 5-Sisters: Verna and Ed Zimmerman, Julia and Pete Peterson, Lillian and Elwood Tolch, Corine and Harmon Beams, Lora and Clifford Manuel. 2-Brother-in-laws: Charles Frank, Gerald Graves.

Monday afternoon January 9, 2012 at 1:00 PM.

Lutheran Care Center Chapel, Altamont, Illinois with the Rev. Theodore Gall officiating.
