Obituary for Michael Dean Mercier

Michael Dean Mercier was born in Kansas City, Missouri on March 5, 1955, and was adopted into the family of Omer and Lorraine (Muchow) Mercier. While growing up on the family farm in West Township, Effingham County near Altamont, Illinois he was baptized and confirmed his faith at the Bethlehem Lutheran Church.

In his younger years he farmed and had a passion for John Deere tractors. Mike collected Cardinal baseball cards beginning at the age of five years. Following his mother’s passion for music he was a student of Elenora Yagow where he learned to play the piano and organ. This followed him later in life, therefore being a church organist for numerous congregations. He graduated from Altamont High School and was proud to be on the 1973 regional basketball team.

Mike had numerous occupations throughout his life but was primarily a carpenter and home builder. Mike had a great sense of humor and loved to make people laugh. Sports were a great part of his life. He was a basketball coach for the Bethlehem Lutheran School as well as Sigel St. Michael’s and Effingham Sacred Heart elementary schools. He was a certified official with the IHSA in both basketball and baseball and officiated many games over the years.

Mike is survived by his son Michael (wife, Andrea) and their son Gabriel of Chillicothe, Illinois.

1-Brother Bob Mercier, Sister Judith (husband, Ronald) Koester both of Altamont, and Sister Jane Mercier of Marissa, Illinois and several nieces and nephews.

Mike was preceded in death by his parents and daughter Kimberly Lynn Mercier.

Memorials may be directed to the Bethlehem Lutheran Church Steeple Fund or the choice of the donor.
