Obituary for Donald Ray Lowry
Don was born on September 20, 1939 in St. Anthony's Hospital into the Christian family, the second of two of siblings to Ray and Elfa Ellis Lowry. He graduated from Effingham High School with the Class of 1957. He proudly served in the United States Army with Combat Engineer Battalion (Old Ironsides Division) from 1957 to 1960. Don was stationed in France for 18 months at the identical location his father served in WWI. In later years he was exceptionally proud of his grandsons who served their country. Don married Fran Ferchow on November 2, 1957 at the Immanuel Lutheran Church, Altamont. Don and Fran lived in Fairview Heights, Illinois from 1961 to 1975. During that time he served as Boy Scout leader and received his Order of the Arrow along with his son Donald at the identical ceremony. He also held various church office capacities at St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Fairview Heights. He was employed by the AMF Bowling for 15 years prior to opening Silver Dollar Lanes in Effingham and Don and Fran owned the bowling alley from 1978 until his retirement in 2008. Don was a faithful member of St. John's Lutheran Church in Effingham, as well as attending St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Foley, Alabama the past five years. His biggest enjoyment in life was traveling the United States with his grandchildren and wife in his RV. Don was a life-long member of the Good Sam Club, The Family Motor Coach Association, and the Bowling Proprietors Association. Memorials by the family's request may be directed to St. John's Lutheran Church Altar Guild, St. Paul's Lutheran Church Window Fund in Foley, Alabama and or to the choice of the Donor.
