Obituary for CHARLES WILLIAM MEEKS
Charles W. Meeks, 80, of Altamont, died at 7:55 p.m. Monday, April 15, 2013, at Barnes-Jewish Hospital, St. Louis. Funeral Services will be at 11 a.m. Monday at Kull Funeral Chapel, Altamont, with the Rev. Willie Deuel officiating. Burial with military rites will be at 2 p.m. in Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery, St. Louis, with the United States Air Force Burial Detail providing the military burial rites. Visitation for family and friends will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Sunday at the funeral chapel. For those who prefer memorials, they may be directed to Disabled American Veterans (DAV) and or the donor's choice. Charles Willliam Meeks was born Jan. 26, 1933, in Effingham, the son of Charles and Ruth (McVicker) Meeks. His sister, Mary Ann, was born four years later. In 1939, at the age of six, Charles and his family moved from Effingham to Altamont. His first employment was with the family business, working for the Meeks Grocery Store. He graduated from Altamont High School in the class of 1951. He was very active in athletics, basketball being his favorite sport, even until his passing. After graduation from high school, he enlisted in the United States Air Force. He served 26 �_ years as an Aeronautical Information Specialist and reached the rank of E-9 or Chief Master Sergeant. While in the Air Force, he continued his education by graduating from the University of Nebraska at Omaha with a bachelor's degree in business. After retirement from the Air Force, he continued to work in his career field in Civil Service at the Defense Mapping Agency. His retirement in 1994 led him back to Altamont, his hometown. During his service to his country, Charles married Joann Rambin on Oct. 22, 1955, in Shreveport, La., and she preceded him in death on Sept. 20, 1981. Together, Charles and Joann were blessed with three sons: Michael, Jeffrey and John. After her untimely death in 1981, he met Rae O'Neill in St. Louis and married her on April 13, 1985, in Emmaus, Penn. Charles was an active member of the Altamont community. He was affiliated with the First United Methodist Church, enjoyed playing golf and especially following the Altamont Indians. He is survived by his wife, Rae Cecile Meeks of Altamont; three sons, Michael (wife, Karen) Meeks of Elkhorn, Neb., Jeffrey Meeks of Walnut Creek, Calif., and John Meeks of Omaha, Neb.; one sister, Mary Ann Meeks of Altamont; six grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents Charles Edward and Ruth Lucille (McVicker) Meeks; and first wife, Joann (Rambin) Meeks. Sign the guestbook at www.effinghamdailynews.com.
